VISION OF THE WORK

The musical documentary drama PHÖNIX RESURREXIT – ODYSSEY IN 4 PARTS by Christian Jost, premiered in 2001, tells the story of creation from the perspective of astronauts’ experiences. ONE SMALL STEP, whose title refers to Neil Armstrong’s famous quote, thus represents a thematic connection to Jost’s large-scale PHÖNIX. Both works are linked by their aim of making different experiences of time musically tangible. ONE SMALL STEP develops at the beginning from a heartbeat-like pulse that forms the basic temporal measure of the entire work. Also at the beginning, motivic elements and events are set to different rhythmic and melodic structures, which are subjected to temporal expansions and contractions in the course of the work. This expansion and contraction of the material symbolises a suspension of space and time.
