CocoonSymphony
Five stops on a journey into the inner self
VISION OF THE WORK
Five stages of a journey into the inner self
The history of music is also the history of the individual expanding into the realm of the fantastic. The individual experiences a journey that ultimately culminates in exaltation. Today, we are increasingly preoccupied with the fantastic for its own sake, as the ultimate personal trip, e.g. on our home laptops, in virtual spaces, in Cineplex cinemas or with headphones. In the paradox of the age of total communication on the one hand and loneliness on the other, withdrawal into oneself is defined in a new quality. A quality in which we create islands in our rooms in order to escape from them through time and space, as it were. In this way, the ‘I’ becomes a landscape to be travelled through, the inner self an adventure that can be confronted with everything and everyone. The CocoonSymphony explores this phenomenon in five different sections that flow into one another, which I would like to refer to as stations: ‘State’ – ‘Escape’ – ‘Free Spaces’ – ‘R.E.M.’ – ‘Shock’. The piece begins with “State”, a line played in unison by all the strings, which gradually breaks apart, falls apart and is driven to ‘Escape’. Fueled by frantic drumbeats, “Escape” ultimately gives rise to “Free Spaces.” In this central section of the piece, the material presented dissolves. Without metre or impulse, this section ebbs away into “R.E.M.”, which – analogous to “Flucht” – nervously and restlessly introduces the waking phase, which – musically based on the first section – ends in “Erschütterung”.
